Welcome to Middle School Art !!

What to Expect:
Course information and learning targets will be available to students through their google calendar and online at: http://www.vmsecondaryartdepartment.wikispaces.com/ All MS art classes will have similar expectations. Students will have art on a rotation for about 4 weeks and be challenged through a variety of learning experiences including: creating art using a variety of materials and techniques, learning about art history and cultures, critiquing and reflecting on art. Final art grade will be pass / fail.

MS ART STANDARDS:

The artist can understand and apply media, techniques, and processes: The artist can use art processes and techniques previously practiced to create a unique work of art that meets project learning targets / goals and expectations. The artist also understands and can demonstrate processes and safety concerns involved for caring for art media / materials as well as utilizing resources and time effectively and efficiently. (project: application of techniques, creativity, process, and working procedures)

Nature Inspired Slab Built Vessel


Standards to be assessed:


1. The artist can understand and apply media, techniques, and processes: The artist can use art processes and techniques previously practiced to create a unique work of art that meets project learning targets / goals and expectations. The artist also understands and can demonstrate processes and safety concerns involved for caring for art media / materials as well as utilizing resources and time effectively and efficiently. (project: application of techniques, creativity, process, and working procedures)
  • I can create a slab vessel about 8-12 oz size for the beginning form.
  • I can creatively and thoughtfully plan out how to incorporate nature (plant / animal) characteristics into this vessel.
  • I can clean up my area, be safe with materials, and utilize time effectively.

2. The artist uses knowledge of structures and functions: The artist can organize the components of a work of art into a cohesive and meaningful whole, such as organizational principles, expressive features and functional art to create a finished work of art. (project: use of elem. of art and craftsmanship to function as intended)
  • I can plan out how to incorporate the elements of art and principles of design to make the piece a unified work of art.
  • I can keep in mind craftsmanship; nice smooth form free of clay burs so this can be a functional work of art that does not cut you when actually used.

3. The artist understands the visual arts in relation to history and cultures, can make interdisciplinary connections, and engage in 21stcent. skills:
  • I can research a variety of ideas in planning for own individual project and understand the role clay and ceramics plays with my daily life.
  • I can utilize measuring skills involved with cutting and constructing a slab built clay project.

4. The artist can reflect upon and assess the characteristics and merits of their work and the work of others: The artist can reflect on their art and projects created during their time in art. (google form reflection at the end of Art)
  • Upon completion of the project I can share ideas about my art and the work of others.

-Begin with clay when ready
-One completed and all is smooth, initial and set to dry out. We will come back to glaze this piece once they are completely dried and fired.

STACKED CREATIVE FORMS DRAWING


Standards to be assessed:

1. The artist can understand and apply media, techniques, and processes: The artist can use art processes and techniques previously practiced to create a unique work of art that meets project learning targets / goals and expectations. The artist also understands and can demonstrate processes and safety concerns involved for caring for art media / materials as well as utilizing resources and time effectively and efficiently. (project: application of techniques, creativity, process, and working procedures)
  • I can create a unique stacked forms drawing incorporating most of the elements of art (line, shape, value, form, color, texture, and space.)
  • I can create a final drawing using 20 forms creatively and correctly in perspective with a horizon line.
  • I can clean up my area, be safe with materials, and utilize time effectively.

2. The artist uses knowledge of structures and functions: The artist can organize the components of a work of art into a cohesive and meaningful whole, such as organizational principles, expressive features and functional art to create a finished work of art. (project: use of elem. of art and craftsmanship to function as intended)

Learning Targets when practicing drawing forms: I can draw basic forms using 1 point perspective and I can draw forms using 2 point perspective.

Standards to be assessed:

  • I can create a unique OP Art drawing / painting incorporating a min. of 2 different shapes.
  • I can create a final OP Art drawing / painting incorporating lines and shapes to demonstrate the meaning of OP Art (Optical Illusion Art) - looking like it is moving.
  • I can clean up my area, be safe with materials, and utilize time effectively.

2. The artist uses knowledge of structures and functions: The artist can organize the components of a work of art into a cohesive and meaningful whole, such as organizational principles, expressive features and functional art to create a finished work of art. (project: use of elem. of art and craftsmanship to function as intended)
  • I can plan out how to incorporate the elements of art and principles of design to make the piece a unified work of art.
