Welcome to Middle School Art !!

What to Expect:
Course information and learning targets will be available to students through their google calendar and online at: http://www.vmsecondaryartdepartment.wikispaces.com/ All MS art classes will have similar expectations. Students will have art on a rotation for about 4 weeks and be challenged through a variety of learning experiences including: creating art using a variety of materials and techniques, learning about art history and cultures, critiquing and reflecting on art. Final art grade will be pass / fail.


MS ART STANDARDS:


S.1. The artist can understand and apply media, techniques, and processes: The artist can use art processes and techniques previously practiced to create a unique work of art that meets project learning targets / goals and expectations. The artist also understands and can demonstrate processes and safety concerns involved for caring for art media / materials as well as utilizing resources and time effectively and efficiently. (project: application of techniques, creativity, process, and working procedures)

S.2. The artist uses knowledge of structures and functions: The artist can organize the components of a work of art into a cohesive and meaningful whole, such as organizational principles, expressive features and functional art to create a finished work of art. (project: use of elem. of art and craftsmanship to function as intended)

S.3. The artist understands the visual arts in relation to history and cultures, can make interdisciplinary connections, and engage in 21stcent. skills:
The artist can research a variety of ideas in planning for own individual project.

S.4. The artist can reflect upon and assess the characteristics and merits of their work and the work of others: The artist can reflect on their art and projects created during their time in art. (google form reflection)

Pinch Pot Creature:

Learning Target:

*The artist can construct a functional hand-built pinch pot form.
*The artist can add clay creature elements (eyes, legs, arms, teeth, hair, spikes, scales, etc.) to the form to make this look more individual and unique.

Tasks:
*Clay Information and examples and demonstration.
*Research monster or creature ideas and sketch some sample ideas of possibilities. Think about what part of your pinch pot will be open? (The head, mouth, etc.)
*Friday begin making the pinch pot form and then wrap up clay pieces well in a plastic sack for next week.
*Add pieces to your character to make it creative (arms, ears, eyes, legs, eyes, etc.)
*Sit out to dry when completed. - We will come back to these to paint - glaze once they have dried and fired.

Non-Objective Oil Pastel Drawing:

Learning Target:
The Artist can create a non-objective oil pastel drawing creatively using the elements of art. (line, shape, color, texture - pattern, space)

WHO I AM - FINGERPRINT DRAWING

Learning Targets:

-The artist can create a unique and nicely finished drawing / painting collage using their fingerprint as a subject to tell a story about themselves incorporating images and text within the fingerprint lines.

-The artist can choose what art materials will work best for them to be able to tell the story of who they are. (watercolor paint, markers, colored pencils, crayons, collage materials such as magazines, pictures, etc.)


Process / Tasks:

- Project Information and examples

-Fill out "Who I am" questions to guide thinking about what you will collage into this drawing / painting also think about what materials would you use to tell your story about who you are?
-Sketch out fingerprint lines on card stock paper
-Color, add images, and text within the fingerprint lines to tell a story about who you are.
